Does God Have to Punish Sin?
We have seen that God is holy…perfect…entirely without sin. To be sinless means that God is honest and fair…He is just.
“He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He.” Deuteronomy 32:4
To say that God is just is to say that He deals equally with everyone and that He always enforces His rules fairly. The Bible teaches that God will bring all of our actions into judgment, with justice.
“God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:14
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne.” Psalm 89:14
Because God is just, He must punish sin. Think of it this way; you would not think a Judge in our land to be just if He were to let a convicted murderer go unpunished. So, the Holy, Righteous God and Judge of all creation would not be just to look the other way, as it were, ignoring our sin and letting us go without punishment.
